Rawlinson Road Middle School Open House

Many parents and students who attended Rawlinson Road Middle School Open House last evening had some great questions and issues to discuss with me.  While we were limited on our time to talk, it was evident that Common Core was a major issue on their mind.  Common Core is a very important issue but, unfortunately, not one that can be resolved at the local School Board level.  South Carolina school districts are required by State and Federal regulations to follow the standards established by these entities.  Changes to these rules and regulations can only be made at the legislative level of government.  Nevertheless, most of our teachers want sound standards to guide their instruction and to gage their student's learning.  I will do everything within my power as a School Board Trustee to ensure they have sensible, adequate and reliable guidelines for instruction in the classroom.

Teaching is more about building relationships than anything else. Rita Pierson has some very inspiring words about building those kinds of relationships with students in order to help them succeed.  I think you will find her words very inspiring if you take time to watch.

Campaign Platform 2014 – Dr. Sarah Harper
“ A voice of reason and experience”
Academics – increase academic level of achievement for all students. The ability to read is critical in every aspect of a person’s life whether in school, the community or on the job.  Every student must be given the necessary skills to decipher text and apply knowledge gained through well developed reading skills.  While reading is a fundamental skill, we must continue to emphasize the areas of math and science if our students are going to be able to compete and participate in the global world of tomorrow.
Communication – exhibit effective communication skills. Clear and articulate communication is essential between all parties involved in the education process of our students.  This includes the Board of Trustees, district employees, parents, students and the community.  As the Board continues to review and revise district policies and procedures, it is imperative that district staff and the community be given opportunities to provide input to these policies.
Technology – provide cutting edge technology for our students and staff.  Today’s student is already equipped with skills to manipulate and access information and ideas across the internet and various other media sources.  Opportunities need to continue to be provided and promoted by the Board of Trustees to allow for the most effective utilization of these tools in the classroom.  Technology does not take the place of excellent teaching in the classroom but it does enhance the teachers’ strategies and tools for teaching and the students’ learning abilities.
Academics, Communication and Technology---ACT  by voting for me, Sarah Harper, on November 4.  By electing me to represent Area Two of the Rock School District Board of Trustees, you will get a fresh new voice of reason with more than twenty-five years experience as a teacher, guidance counselor and administrator.
